Fun At Freights

You’ll find Freights Bay located just above Oistins, in the parish of Christ Church along the south coast of the island. It has a small shoreline and short stretch of beach, so it’s actually not an ideal spot for swimming or sun tanning. It’s also quite rocky and is known for the occasional sea urchin.

In fact, Freights Bay is more well-known for being one of the top surf spots on the south coast.

You’ll find most of the island’s local surf schools take their students to learn to surf at Freights Bay because of the moderate waves there.

You’ll see lots of beginners catching their first waves at Freights Bay, much to their delight and excitement.

Please Take Note…

Freights Bay isn’t really a ‘family-friendly’ beach for a few reasons.

Firstly, there is no lifeguard on duty.

Secondly, there are no amenities or facilities here. There’s nowhere to purchase food or drinks, and there are no toilets, showers, or changing facilities.

You must also be “able-bodied” to get down the stairs to the beach, and there’s a cliff overlooking the Bay, so one must be mindful if you’re taking children to Freights.

Freights Bay is also quite a secluded spot, and parking is in and around the residential area surrounding the Bay, so you’ll need to please be courteous of where you park your car here.

It is worth noting that it is safe to swim at Freights Bay but remember that the currents can change quickly, and you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled for incoming surfers and their surfboards.

Freights Bay is actually a great place for a picnic overlooking the Bay and makes a great afternoon out. However, if you’re looking for a more family-friendly spot with safer swimming conditions, we suggest checking out some of the other beaches on the south coast.

Features

— Top surf spot (especially for beginners)

Wave Hunting – January 10, 2021 – Freights Bay

This break has become possibly the best-known beginners and long-boarders line-up on the Island. However, when it is cranking, all of the hardcore surfers make their way here.
From the time I knew what surfing was all about, Freights Bay has been the most anticipated left on De Rock.
I have not only seen Freights Bay at it’s best but have also had the privilege to surf here on one of those rare magical days.
When here is going-off, this is the perfect left on the Island, hands down.

Driving Directions

If you are coming from Oistins, heading away from Bridgetown, follow the road until it comes to a Y fork in the road.

Then, take the right turn towards Enterprise and then turn right again.

You will need to turn left at the T junction with the ocean in front of you and continue on this road until you reach a clearing.

You will see Cotton Beach Apartments on your left, and you can park opposite Searocks Road.

Next to the house on the cliff, you’ll see a gate, which has stairs down to the beach.

You can view the location of Freights Bay on our Barbados Interactive Map.
