St. Michael


St. Michael is located on the south and a little bit of the west coasts of Barbados and is home to the country's capital Bridgetown, where you will find duty free shopping, restaurants and bars. This is also where the majority of the population reside and there are many tourist attractions within this parish.

Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados has a lot of duty free shops, with the majority being on Broad Street. Here you will also find the world famous Kensington Oval where the recent ICC Cricket World Cup final was held.

You will also find National Heroes Square in Bridgetown, which has recently been refurbished to host events. The Central Bank of Barbados is located in Bridgetown, who you will need if you are making any kind of investment on the island as all foreign exchange needs to be registered with them if you want to take that money back out of Barbados in the future.

Also in Bridgetown you will find the Parliament Buildings and Illaro Court, the official residence of the Prime Minister. There is a large park called Queens Park, with a lovely old house, now used as an art gallery, this is Queens Park House. The Queen Elizabeth hospital is in Bridgetown, which is a large 600 bed hospital used for all medical emergencies. There is also Bayview Hospital, which is private and used for other emergencies such as broken bones and maternity services.

If you want to see the island by air, then we highly recommend a trip on Bajan Helicopters, which are located in Bridgetown. From the air you can see the diverse geography of the island and enjoy the spectacular view of the white sandy beaches and the coastline.

There are lots of churches in the parish of St. Michael and in Bridgetown you will find St. Michaels Cathedral and St. Patricks Roman Catholic Cathedral. Other churches in St. Michael include St. Paul's Church, St. Mary's Church, St. Matthew's Church and St. Barnabas Church.

For education you will find the University of West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and Barbados Community College in this parish. In Bridgetown you will also find the National Stadium, which is used for sporting events and large concerts.

Bridgetown Harbour is a busy port with regular cruise liners docking here, with visitors disembarking for day trips around Barbados. Next to the harbour you will find the Pelican Craft Centre, which has the workshops of many local craftsmen and galleries where you can purchase their work. There are some lovely shops here selling unusual gifts so it is well worth paying a visit.

Around the corner from the Pelican Craft Centre, next door to the Harbour you will also find the offices of the Barbados Tourism Authority, so you may like to drop in there and pick up some information on things to do and see during your stay in Barbados of simply browse our site at Totally Barbados for additional information.

If you head out of Bridgetown towards the west coast on the Spring Garden Highway you will find the Mount Gay Rum factory, where you can take a tour and learn all abut the history of rum and how it is made. On this same stretch of road, you will also find two stunning beaches and they are Brandon's Beach and Brighton Beach. This is also where you will find the Malibu Beach Club.

Heading out of Bridgetown along the south coast you will find the Garrison Savannah, home to the Barbados Turf Club, where you can watch horse racing every other weekend. The Garrison area is also where you will find the Barbados Museum and Bush Hill House, where George Washington stayed. This area looks out over Carlisle Bay, which is great for swimming and a safe harbour for yachts. Here you will also find the Barbados Yacht Club and The Boatyard - a great facility both day and night offering beach chairs, drinks and food. Also on this same stretch of road you will find Needham's Point and the recently renovated Hilton Hotel.

If you are interested in the local beer of Barbados, Banks then you can take a tour of their factory, located in Wildey. And if you would like to see the statue of Bussa - the slave believed to have led the great slave revolt then you can find this on the ABC Highway at the roundabout near Barbados Community College.
