Cheapside Market, Barbados - Barbados is an island of progress. We pride ourselves in the fact that we are able to keep up with almost any international tourist destination as far as hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and shopping.
Our Government is stable and secure and we are one of the most economically advanced islands in the region. However, the fact remains that we are a small island; a very small island and we refuse to loose the charm that comes with being a small island.
To discover that charm visit Cheapside Market, a small strip of road in our island’s capital, Bridgetown. Cheapside Market is an area that the government has designated to small, side-of-the-road vendors and craftsmen to show and sell their wares. The best time to go is Saturday morning where vendors sell clothes, bags, while others have fruit, vegetables, handmade leather goods, jewellery in a variety of materials, artwork, and household goods.
Everything is, as the name of the market implies, very reasonably priced and most vendors are willing to negotiate on large purchases. Here you will find a beautiful display of really unusual jewellery operated by a local woman, Azizah and a Kenyan man, Ras Kimathi. Together, they make a variety of jewellery made of metals, beads and natural fibres, as well as beautiful belts, leather and beaded shoes.
All of the vendors and craftspeople are extremely pleasant and helpful.
It is a great example of Barbadian culture, so if you are looking for somewhere to get a truly original souvenir to take back home with you, or the perfect gift for that impossible-to-buy-for friend, or just looking for something interesting to do, pay Cheapside Market a visit and discover some of our small island charm for yourself!
