Legal Services

The Legal System of Barbados is based on English Common Law which has been modified by Statue to meet the requirements of the island.

The Judicial Branch comprises of the Supreme Court of Judicature i.e. judges are appointed by the Service Commissions for the Judicial and Legal Services and are independent of the executive and legislative functions of the Government itself.
The Supreme Court is constitutionally mandated and consists of: The High Court & The Court of Appeals.

The judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and after consultation with the leader of the Opposition Party. While the Judicial Committee of Her Majesty's Privy Council (which sits in London, England) is the ultimate appellate court.

Legal services offered in Barbados are considered to be consistent with that found internationally.
