An exhibition of the work of celebrated Barbadian artist Mr. Fielding Babb, B.C.H. opened on Sunday Janaury 20, 2008 at the art gallery of the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, UWI, Cave Hill.
Entitled, "Cultural Treasures: Now and then of Barbados" all of the work is from Babb's private collection and painted with his unique pallet knife technique.
Babb is well-known for his fascination with the Barbadian "Chattel House" and other buildings in the landscape. While this seems to be the main focus of the work it appears that Babb is also encouraging the viewer to fall in love with the entire landscape and accept the buildings as a continuation of it - the art of God complemented by the art of man in the architectural pieces.
The work is a treat for those who enjoy rustic Barbados and places the viewer in a setting where the senses are titillated with colour, smell and the sounds of life.
"Codrington College", places one in the tranquil space surrounding the theological institution while capturing snatches of the building through the majestic trees. "Martin's Bay" seems a rural kingdom, abundant with vegetable life, an endearing vista of the sea and of course the ever-present Chattel houses in the foreground and background.
The exhibition runs from 10am to 5pm each weekday until February 2nd,2008. For appointments please call (246) 417-4780 or (246) 417-4776.
