The Barbados Agriculture Society reintroduced this event in 2005 after a 30-year absence to showcase the talents of local farmers. It highlights the best of Barbadian agriculture and is aimed at the general public as well as those in the industry.
The exhibition is held in Queens Park in Bridgetown from March 7 - 9 2008, 10am - 9pm daily with the popular Sheep Show, Dairy and Beef Show, Adorable Dog Show, The BHS Flower exhibit, Petting Zoo, Caribbean Cuisine, Farmer's Market, Shopping Bazaar, Educational Area Children's Entertainment Area, Donkey Rides, Art & Craft Village, Live entertainment throughout the weekend. New competitions for 2008 include the Kitchen Garden Competition and the Craft Competition.
This is the premier event of national agriculture in Barbados, this year's theme is 'Protecting the future'. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have partnered with the Barbados Agricultural Society so that visitors can experience all the facets of Barbados' agricultural sector in a relaxed and comfortable environment. It aims to promote agriculture to the Barbadian public so that they can appreciate food security through increased local food production, the reduction of a high food import bill and the enhancement of the quality of local food.
Agrofest therefore provides an opportunity for vegetable and fruit farmers, livestock farmers, fishermen, as well as persons involved in horticulture and other areas to come together in order to showcase a variety of high quality local products, promote the use of new and improved appropriate technology for crop production, demonstrate the close relationship between the agricultural sector and other sectors, and to show the environmental well-being.
It is an occasion to highlight to all, especially the youth, the many opportunities, which are available for career choices and advancement within the industry. Agrofest also afford overseas investors and guests of the exhibition the opportunity to show off their products while seeing first hand the best of Barbados' agriculture and related sectors.
Objectives of Agrofest:
* To demonstrate the symbiotic relationship between agriculture and the rest of the community.
* To highlight the impact of agriculture on other economic sectors.
* To cater to the wide and divergent interests of the Barbadian public.
* To demonstrate the agricultural career opportunities for young people.
* To demonstrate the importance of agriculture in feeding and providing economic support to the family.
* To portray agriculture in a fun and interesting way.
