I-Queen - An Anthology of Portraits of Contemporary Barbadian Rastafari Women

In just eighty-years the Rastafari Movement has matured from being the seeds of a mere prophetical utterance by Marcus Garvey into a defining cultural and spiritual force, spreading from its birthplace in Jamaica across the Caribbean and around the world.

In Barbados for roughly the past forty-years the vibrancy of Rastafari runs like an undercurrent to the islands popular mainstream culture. It is this energy that serves as the inspiration and driving force of the ‘I-Queen’ project a three-part production comprised of a photography exhibition, a day of festivities, and documentary film.

In total the ‘I-Queen’ project seeks to explore the influence of Jamaican born Rastafari culture on the Barbadian landscape through the lives of Barbadian women who are Rastafari practitioners.
