Barbados Concert with the New Kids on the Block

The 25th anniversary concert of CHUM-FM's Breakfast in Barbados was served up on a silver platter by Roger, Darren and Marilyn as they welcomed the almost 1,500 strong crowd to Barbados.

The magical gardens of Holders House in St. James were the venue and with an outdoor stage, a cloudless sky and a starry night - it was indeed a midsummer's night dream.

Jaicko

Jaicko, with his distinctive afro hairstyle, had the honour of opening the show and he also held home court advantage performing in front of his Barbadian crowd.

Throughout his performance he noted that he was representing both the "Bajans" and Canadians in the audience. Needless to say his enthusiasm was appreciated and received with as much gusto and demonstrable cheers from the crowd.

The high-energy performance was the perfect teaser for the audience who seemed at times to forget their anticipation of the arrival of Bare Naked Ladies and New Kids on the Block.

In his first song Jaicko sang "I like nice things but I don't need them to be happy", highlighting the relaxing island vibe of Barbados. He interacted with the audience and went offstage into the crowd to sing to a few lucky ladies who probably still have the gleams of glitter in their eyes.

Marilyn confirmed what everyone already believed, that Jaicko, only 18 years old, has a bright future in the music industry. The audience was singing along and swaying to the music especially during his final song, "Oh Yeah"; an infectious single that will have you nodding your head impulsively!

Jaicko's playlist:

» Two Piece
» Rude Girl - to which he put a spin on his Barbadian counterpart Rihanna's recent number one hit "Rude Boy"
» Fast Forward - the second single from his upcoming debut album "Can I"
» Oh Yeah - the infectious first single

Barenaked Ladies

The Barbadian introduction was followed by the Canadian explosion that is Barenaked Ladies!

As they walked on stage, Ed Robertson announced to the crowd "Let's get ready to rumble!"; immediately striking a Caribbean chord.

The band shared with the audience that they decided that this should be the next stop on their Canadian tour - and by the smiles on their faces it was clear that this was not a decision they regretted!

Interspersed throughout their performance, the band provided a satirical running commentary on what they had done on the island so far. From sampling the local island rotis to swimming with the turtles on the West Coast - everything they talked about or sang about was done with such enthusiasm.

For a brief moment they almost had the entire crowd believing that their "good friend Rihanna" was about to come on stage! It is this conversational attitude that makes the band one of the most popular from Canada.

The majority of the audience sang along with the songs - which showed the popularity and endurance of the songs such as "One Week" and "The Old Apartment".

But what attracted the audience were the big smiles on the faces of Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart. There is nothing like watching a band perform that is truly enjoying themselves.

The crowd responded equally showing they wanted to be there as much as the Barenaked Ladies did!

Bare Naked Ladies playlist:

» Bang - the theme song from hit television show "The Big Bang Theory"
» The Old Apartment - their first hit in the United States of America in 1997
» Falling for the First Time
» Impromptu Calypso - a song about beautiful Barbados, neighbouring island Saint Lucia and everything in between that popped into Ed's head, all with an island beat!
» Freak Show
» Sound of Your Voice
» It's All Been Done
» Run Away
» One Week - the one of a kind pop commentary song with lyrics like "watching X-Files with no lights on...I hope the Smoking Man is in this one"
» Perfect Time
» If I Had a Million Dollars - where Kevin Hearn switched from bass guitar to the accordion for this number
» It's Magic - accompanied with a synchronised boy-band dance routine as homage to New Kids on the Block! Plus some beep bopping by Ed!

Barbados and the New Kids on the Block

Dressed in all white, the original boy band - New Kids on the Block - graced the stage to thunderous applause and screams.

Hyped up by Jaicko, then with the subtle magical introduction of Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, and Donnie Wahlberg, the now frenzied crowd were sailing along the silver lining in glee!

Each member's outfit reflected his individual style and was carried off without any arrests by the fashion police; tough-guy Donnie had a mafia hat, fashion conscious Jordan wore a jacket and a scarf, Joey had a waistcoat, Danny and Jonathan both in casual shirts - picture them on a cloud of glittering lights and a crowd moving in harmony; absolutely heavenly.

In true form, the band connected with the audience especially Donnie, Jordan and Joey who ensured they were shaking hands with all the fans throughout their performances.

Their dance routines were well rehearsed and the beat just went on and on. If they quit their day job - they have another option teaching dancing; moving like angels.

It was a nostalgic moment for many in the audience as this was the band that paved the way for the likes of the N'Sync's and Backstreet Boys in more recent years.

The feeling of nostalgia under the stars on a tropical island, the warmth in the air - a perfect night for celebrating twenty five years of emotion and energy.

New Kids on the Block playlist:

» Didn't I Blow Your Mind
» Summertime
» My Favourite Girl
» The Right Stuff
» Dirty Dancing
» I'll Be Loving You Forever
» Pop interlude - solo by Joey McIntyre
» Rap interlude - solo by Donnie Wahlberg
» One Song
» Step by Step
» Hang Tough

The crowd would have had to be told it was the "end" of the concert because the heights that these concert performances went to, left everyone soaring on the silver lining cloud. Well done CHUM FM family!
