About Holders Season:
Wendy Kidd has been producing The Holders Season in Barbados for 18 years. It started in 1993 with just 3 evenings and 8 performers, and has now exploded into a 3 week season of performances from top artists and musicians from all around the world.
From the end of March until early April every year, Holders Hill in Barbados is transformed into a delightful outdoor theatre with performers coming from Canada, USA, England, Ireland, Italy and other parts of Europe.
Here, you will be surrounded by a glamorous crowd and can enjoy 2 weeks of culture, including the best actors from London's West End and New York's Broadway; not to mention opera, music and stand-up comedy from world famous performers.
Holders Season is a sophisticated festival located at Holders House, an exquisite setting which normally hosts famous polo matches. The theatre stage showcases the stars, under the stars, surrounded by emerald green trees, The polo field stretches out to your left, and soft lighting romantically enhances the natural beauty of the surroundings. It is worth arriving in plenty of time to soak up the wonderful calming and enchanting atmosphere that is Holders Season.
Each evening, before the performances commence, there are a variety of food and drink tents, such as the champagne tent, where you can relax, enjoy the warm evening breeze and soak up the ambience of your surroundings.
Holders Season Location:
Holders Season is held on the west coast of the island, in the parish of St. James. From the Spring Garden Highway, at the Frank Worrell roundabout turn right onto Walmer Lodge, you will see an Esso gas station on your right, turn right here and go up Holders Hill, on your left you will see the entrance to Holders.
Holders Season and the arts community:
The Season plays a role in supporting local talent. Many of Barbados' local stars have appeared at Holders. Young local talent is showcased alongside top class artists in theatre, opera, comedy, music and dance from around the world. This helps emerging artists develop their careers through learning from artistic masters and performing to a large, receptive audience.
The Arts and Photographic Exhibitions, for instance, provide an opportunity for new talent to showcase their work next to top established artists.
Holders Season 2011
Holders Season aims to produce an outstanding season this year with artists from the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and West Africa. In total, there are 29 artists performing 8 concerts over 2 weeks, including our renowned Gala Night.
This season Holders are working closely with the University of West Indies (UWI) to present a performance of ART. ART is the award winning West End play by Yasmina Reza which has also previously performed at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.
Every year Mrs Kidd supports a local Charity, and this year she we will support The Barbados Cancer Society. This is a nationwide charitable organisation dedicated to the prevention and alleviation of pain and suffering from cancer by public education, the promotion of early detection and prompt treatment, and the provision of patient care, support services and sincere counselling. Proceeds from the Classical night will go towards the important work of this Charity in Barbados.
Local guest artists appearing at Holders Season 2011 are Ziggy Walcott Riddim Band, Nikita Vaughan & Dario Brewster, Paula Hinds & Trio, G Syndicate and the Lowrey Worrell All Star Band.
