Forget all you thought you knew about fishing. Step abroad a charter fishing boat and prepare for the Barbados fishing experience of a lifetime. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman, a complete novice, or a family with kids out for a fun trip, Barbados has a fishing charter to suit you.
Pelagic game fish, such as Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Dolphin Fish (sometimes called Dorado or Mahi Mahi) and Yellow fish Tuna, tend to prefer deep blue water, ranging from the surface to the very deep, and hence the term "Deep Sea Fishing".
The rule of thumb is "the deeper the water the bigger the fish". Yet, monster fish have been caught just outside the harbor, so it's just a "rule of thumb", you never know when or where a big fish will strike.
In Barbados, the charter boat captains tend to fish on the "drop off" of the undersea cliffs and on top of and around the various offshore shoals on either the west or south coast of the island.
The two coasts are different in that the west is the leeward side and is calmer than the south which is windward and therefore choppier, but remember another fishing rule of thumb, "the choppier the water the better the bite" and the most important one of all "you need to fish where the fish are", so your captain will decide where to fish on the given day.
Charter boats charge around $100 USD per hour for the boat, and this usually allows you to bring up to 6 people. Most of them include hotel or apartment pickup, refreshments (usually bottle water, soft drinks, beer and rum) and snacks on a regular length charter.
On longer trips, lunch is included. These trips operate either in the morning, the afternoon or "all day" and are of 4, 6, or 8 hour duration, depending on your requirements. Obviously the boats are equipped with all the fishing gear and tackle required, and you should discuss any aspects of the charter with the operator when you call to make reservations.
Let's hope that your fishing trip in Barbados happens like when sport fishermen mention the best of the best. They are talking about pole-busting, reel screaming, line-burning action....angler vs. fish.....no-holds-barred, heart-pounding excitement.
Good luck and good fishing!
