Catamaran Sailing

Each month the TotallyBarbados.com newsletter brings you ideas and detailed accounts of experiences that you can enjoy on any given day in Barbados.

This month we look at the very pleasant experience of Catamaran Sailing and encourage you to add this to your list of holiday activities.

Catamarans usually leave from the Careenage in Bridgetown, and the days sailing kicks off usually between 9am and 10am.

From Bridgetown the catamarans sail northwards along the west coast, for the first half an hour; you may be thinking that you have made a terrible mistake as the boat bobs up and down on the choppy waters surrounding the harbor - however as soon as they hoist up the sails, it becomes very calm on the boat and you can then relax and enjoy seeing the beautiful island of Barbados from the water.

As you start your ascent of the west coast, the scenery is stunning and you get a much better view of not only our astounding beaches but also of the magnificent homes built right on the water on the west coast.

Your cruise is all-inclusive and usually costs about $75USD depending on the operator. You can enjoy tea and coffee as you begin to enjoy the sunshine and cooling breezes in the morning part of your cruise.

Most Catamarans will pull into a safe bay for your first dip; they provide snorkel equipment of life jackets, masks, snorkels and fins. As the west coast is prime ground for swimming with the turtles you are likely to swim with quite a few, which love to play and be petted. With water so clear you can see all the vibrant colors of the tropical fish.

Most stops are for an hour at a time so you have plenty of opportunity to swim and then get back on to dry off in the hot Caribbean sun. It is suggested to wear the highest sun screen for this day out as you may not feel the sun's effects due to the cool breeze blowing on sea. Also take some light clothing that you can cover up with if you feel yourself burning. Sunglasses are also advisable.

A full bar is available serving most spirits and mix, or perhaps you would like to get totally tropical and have a Pina Colada or Rum Punch, or just have an ice cold beer.

There is music on the boat, so you can really unwind, lets the drinks flow and sunbathe on the deck.

Then they usually move up the coast a bit further, making another stop for lunch.

Lunch is always good and obviously being on a boat you would expect to enjoy some fresh fish; but there is also chicken, salad, traditional Bajan macaroni pie and rice and peas.

The lunch stop is slightly longer, giving you a chance to let your lunch settle before you dive off for another dip and again mingle with your new friends the turtles.

After lunch, the boat makes another stop, where again you are encouraged to swim and most of all relax. Jet Ski operators in the area will come up to the Catamaran and offer you a ride. This is great fun on the west coast as the waters are calmer than those of the south or east coast; therefore if you fancy crashing around the waves then try a Jet Ski, which is normally $25US for 15 mins.

At around 2.30pm the Catamaran will gently sail back down the coast until you are returned to the Careenage for 3pm.

So in all you are out for 5 hours and it really is a very pleasant way to spend the day.
