Barbados Wreck Diving

Barbados undoubtedly has the best collection of wrecks in the Caribbean.

Standing above all others, quite literally, is the SS Stavronikita, a 365 foot long freighter which was sunk on purpose in 1978 to form a man-made reef. She lies just north of Bridgetown, upright on a sandy bed with her keel resting at 130 feet. This massive, impressive wreck needs 5 to 6 dives to see all of it and it is the most often re-dived site on the island.

The picturesque Carlisle Bay, located just south of Bridgetown, is the only natural anchorage in Barbados. In a small section of the bay, the Carlisle Bay Marine Park houses six wrecks of varying size and age, which are very easily accessible to both divers and snorkellers.

With the help of a good dive leader it is possible to see all wrecks on one dive. They vary in depth from 20 to 60 feet and the largest, the Bajan Queen, is over 120 feet long.

The Berwyn and Ellion, both over 70 feet long, have the most growth and house a multitude of marine life. This is an excellent place to take photographs of eels, glassy sweepers, frogfish, red lipped batfish, octopus, French grunts, cleaner shrimp and crabs, so grab your underwater camera and venture under the surface!
