The Media Resource Department of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St Michael, Barbados provides a range of services to the island's schools inclusive of teacher training in educational media, hardware and software loans, reprographics and internally produced educational materials. |
The Barbados Media Resource Department (MRD), formerly The Audio Visual Aids Department, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1969.
It is a department of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development located at the Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St Michael, Barbados.
The mission of the MRD is to contribute to the attainment of the highest standards in education, through training in and the provision of educational media resources, consistent with the goals and policies of the Barbados Ministry of Education.
To fulfill this mandate the MRD provides a range of services inclusive of:
» Training for teachers and administrators to empower them to be more effective in the use of instructional technology:
» Desktop publishing
» PowerPoint
» Digital camera
» Video Camera
» Multimedia Projector
» Short term hardware and software loans
» Printing and photocopying services
» Reprographics
» Facilitating the development and production of educational multimedia resources
» Extended opening hours on Wednesdays
» Library facilities
» Summer workshops for students and teachers
These services are aimed at empowering teachers in both the primary and secondary schools of Barbados to be more effective when incorporating the use of resources and technology into the teaching learning process. Furthermore, private sector personnel are trained by the MRD in using various electronic media as they are recognized as stakeholders and partners in the education process.
Ongoing assessment of the physical plant, upgrades to equipment and competent broadcast initiatives secure the future and continuity of the department on the cutting edge of technology.
The MRD's commitment and dedication to providing quality education through the provision of superior media resources has been reinforced by:
» The acquisition of a color digital printing press
» The revitalization and retrofitting of the Gordon Corbin Studio as a premier facility for providing quality educational broadcasts
» The acquisition of an outside broadcast vehicle
» The implementation and management of a Public Broadcast Service for education
The Public Broadcast Service for Education is an outstanding accomplishment which encompasses radio and television broadcasts as well as online access to education resources for teachers, students and the general public.
The vision of the Department is to become the leading provider of quality education resources and training and in so doing become the beacon of excellence in educational support services in Barbados and the region.
