Visit the art studio and art gallery of artist Janice Sylvia Brock for a surprising experience. |
The short climb up Seaview Road (Highway 1A) from Holetown is rewarded with an unexpected vista of the Caribbean as you arrive at Brocklands, her studio and gallery.
It is a large, airy space, with her tall easel surrounded by walls covered with her vibrant paintings.
The bold colours and sweeping curves for which Brock is best known suggest a woman of amazonian physique. In fact she is petite, blond and delicate, though a woman of huge charisma, and people never fail to warm to her sunny personality and infectious laugh.
People have described Brock's work as 'feel-good art', saying: "It makes me smile". However she has also created pieces of the most exquisite delicacy and subtlety.
Her portraits, while faithful to the subject, are imbued with a special quality. What underlies all her work is a natural genius in the use of colour and line.
Her paintings range in size from around 10" x 8" (25 cm x 20 cm) to 40" x 72" (100 cm x 180 cm) and beyond. Selected works have been reproduced as prints, from small pieces to large 'gouttelettes' - a new printing technique available only to a select few artists in the world.
British by birth, her paintings hang in collections all over the world, from New York to New Zealand, and from Mexico to Moscow. Two pieces were purchased for the White House, Washington DC.
Having had Still's disease (juvenile arthritis) since childhood, she has always had a passion for helping others with physical and mental challenges, and over the last few years around BDS $700,000 has been raised for Barbados charities by auctioning her paintings, one of which achieved $400,000 in 2008.
She still maintains a studio in the UK, where she is a member of London's prestigious Chelsea Arts Club, and an Honorary Fellow of the North West Academy of Arts.
Her book 'Impressions of the Caribbean' was launched internationally in January 2003, and the few remaining unsold copies are becoming very collectable. She was the subject of a television documentary screened in 2007 in the UK, and is now working on a TV series, and on her autobiography.
Janice Sylvia Brock will be happy to welcome you to her studio.
