The capital city of Barbados is Bridgetown, which is the main shopping district in Barbados and therefore the south coast as well.
It boasts the widest range of stores from local to international fare. Bridgetown literally has everything from Tiffany's to the typical street vendor, all encompassed in old English, colonial style, architecture.
The best times to head into Bridgetown is around 9am before the midday heat and after the morning rush hour traffic. There is a shuttle service for only US$3.00 per person from hotels on both the west and south coasts operating from Monday to Saturday, to and from Bridgetown.
Call the customer service desk at Cave Shepherd between 8:30am and 4:00pm (431-2078) or your hotel's activities desk to make arrangements for your collection and return transportation.
Shopping on the south coast has grown in the last few years with the new Vista shopping complex opening. In the Vista there is a new fourth branch of Cave Shepherd which offers an outstanding assortment of designer perfume and cosmetics, cameras and electronics, liquor and cigars, sportswear and beachwear, local music and quality souvenirs, all available at duty free prices with savings of up to 44%.
In the Rockley or Hastings section of the south coast, three small malls are within a half a mile of each other: Hastings Plaza, Quayside Centre and Shak Shak Complex. Arguably the best place on the south coast to buy swimwear is in Quayside Centre at Lazy Days & Island Waves and Lazy Days Kids which carry all the big names in swimwear and surf gear at duty free prices. In Hastings Plaza there is a branch of Harrisons with a full range of fragrances, giftware, designer clothing and leather goods.
Sheraton Centre Mall, just off the ABC Highway in Christ Church, is fully air conditioned and houses over 70 specialty stores, an elegant food court and a brand new Cineplex with 6 movie theatres.
