Barbados West Coast Shopping

The West Coast of Barbados offers the most varied shopping outside of Bridgetown.

Holetown Shopping

Holetown offers a boutique chic shopping experience. It is classy, yet relaxed; expensive, yet high quality and a place that's just as fun to frequent to window shop as it is to make purchases.

From multi-storey shopping complexes featuring international stores and designer brand names to small, intricate, chattel houses hosting local crafts and merchandise; Holetown is a paradise for people who like shopping.

The West Coast Mall

The modern West Coast Mall houses an excellent range of tax free stores, including a glittering Diamonds International, a Bookstore, a duty free Cave Shepherd shop which sells clothes, pottery and perfume, an electrical shop, a hair dressers and more. The shops are all situated around a cafe which sells sandwiches and drinks at reasonable prices. There are also stalls dotted around the building which sell cheaper, yet very pretty, clothes and jewellery.

Behind this shopping mall is a large supermarket called Super Centre. Here you will be able to purchase all the food and drink you need. There is ample free parking both outside this mall and behind the supermarket. There is also a bottle recycling booth in the supermarket car park at which you can hand in your old Banks, Heineken and Coca-Cola bottles to be recycled and get paid for it.

Chattel Village

In the midst of life's chaos, with jobs to do, homes to run and kids to ferry about, many Barbadian women rely on a simple safety valve to keep the pressure down - a girly shopping day at Barbados' Chattel Village.

Whether it's gourmet food, precious hand crafted jewellery, a new dress or simply some window shopping that you are after, a couple of hours at Barbados' Chattel Village renews the spirits and lifts the soul - leaving one buoyed up for the next round in the daily battle.

Ladies who lunch flock to the Devine Cafe, which is in the centre of this picturesque shopping village with its leafy, shaded courtyard, quiet, relaxed atmosphere and tasty sandwiches and cakes. This cafe is a little oasis in which friends catch up, couples steal an hour alone together and families spend some quality time together. Lunch-time dishes are homemade and beautifully cooked by the talented team.

Holetown's Chattel Village is a fairyland of shops - traditional chattel houses have been transformed into beautiful boutiques which are painted pastel pinks, blues and yellows. As you float through this tranquil hideaway, be sure to stop at 'Beth & Tracie' - a fairy grotto filled with glittering, sequined sun dresses, stylish, beaded flip flops and woven beach baskets and bags.

If your life feels like it's on fast-forward, press the stop button and visit Barbados' Chattel Village shops. A spot of window shopping followed by a piece of scrummy cake with a group of girlfriends letting off steam can do wonders.

Limegrove Lifestyle Centre

The newest shopping centre to hit Holetown is the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre. This US$50 million project has just opened and will house luxury shops selling designer brands including Armani, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Ralph Lauren.

Shoppers will be able to purchase all their favourite brands under one roof in Barbados. This is the first time some of these brands have ever been available in Barbados with shoppers having to fly to other cities such as Miami to get hold of them.

Within the complex there will also be a cinema, a nightclub, 3 courtyards featuring restaurants, bars and an art gallery. There will also be a place that you can leave your children.

The centre will throw a variety of exciting events throughout the year such as art, film, food and music events. It will also be available for private functions including weddings.

The centre is a beautiful, open plan oasis - majestic and luxurious. It will offer the most glamorous shopping experience in Barbados, and will elevate Holetown into a thriving centre of shops, entertainment and culture.

The Janice Sylvia Brock Art Gallery is a short climb up Seaview Road from Holetown. The walls are adorned by bright, bold, yet romantic paintings that capture Barbados and its vibrant, colourful culture.

Other shops in Holetown

There are a number of other shops dotted around Holetown. These include:

» Ladies Boutique (next to Groots bar and restaurant) sells women's clothing.
» NKM Clothing outlet (opposite St James church) sells women's clothing.
» Bio Beauty sells women's clothes.
» The Sugar Collection (opposite The Sandpiper Hotel) sells women's clothes.
» Beth & Tracie (opposite the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre) sells women's clothing.
» The Beach Hut (behind the Texaco garage) sells women's and men's beachwear. Next to The Beach Hut is 'Posh Nosh' which sells homemade takeaway food and 'New York Pizza', a pizza takeaway. Opposite these is 'The Movie Store', a video rental shop.

Also, in the centre of Holetown you will see a large white building - this is the police station. The post office is next door and also the Driving License Authority.

Speightstown

Speightstown is north of Holetown. It is another pretty shopping area which can get quite busy. Among many other shops, Speightstown has a Gallery of Caribbean Art, a Shell Gallery where you can discover a selection of wondrous and unusual shells from all over the world, and 3 Diamonds International jewellery boutiques.

Speightstown tends to be a bit livelier than Holetown, but not as large or as busy as Bridgetown. Again, you can find local and international merchandise there.
