In 1710 General Christopher Codrington died and in his will he stated that he would like a college built to teach medicine, surgery and divinity.
Codrington College is located in St. John on the east coast of Barbados.
The college was completed in 1743 and is still open with an active role in theological teachings and education in conjunction with The University of The West Indies.
In 1745 Codrington College became a grammar school and in 1829 became a
fully fledged college, however the original building was destroyed by the hurricane of 1831. It was rebuilt that same year and that is the structure that we see today. In 1875 it became affiliated to Durham University, in England and has maintained high academic standards ever since. In 1965 it became affiliated to The University of The West Indies.
Codrington College commands views of the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by beautiful gardens which include a lily pond. Visitors are welcome to wander around the grounds and visit the chapel.
