Drax Hall

Drax Hall is located in the parish of St. George in the middle of the island.

It is believed to have been built sometime in the 1650's by brothers William and James Drax when they fled England after the execution of King Charles I.

They were a wealthy family and made Drax Hall one of the largest properties in Barbados. Today there are only three Jacobean properties in the Western Hemisphere, with Drax Hall being the eldest. It has a gabled roof, casement gabled windows and a Jacobean staircase.

Barbados is lucky enough to home one of the other remaining Jacobean properties and that is St. Nicholas Abbey.

Information correct at the time of posting 5 April 2006.
