Parish of St. James in Barbados

St. James is located in the west coast of Barbados and is where you will find the crème de la crème of fine dining restaurants, hotels and duty free shopping. The parish of St. James is lined with the gold coast of Barbados and the gentle Caribbean Sea.

The main town in St. James is Holetown, which was the third largest town on the island and is historic because it was the first settlement area in Barbados in 1627.

There is lots of duty free shopping available as the town has three shopping malls – Sunset Crest, Chattel House Village and the West Coast Mall selling designer clothes, tourist souvenirs and luxury items.

There are some excellent world famous restaurants in Barbados, so if you are a foodie then this strip on the west coast is a gourmet delight.

St. James is also where you will find the first Anglican Church built in Barbados and that is St. James Parish Church, which was built in 1628. The present structure was built in 1789 after the original structure was destroyed by a hurricane.

Other interesting churches in this parish are St. Silas Chapel, St. Albans Church and a Roman Catholic Church; St. Frances of Assisi, that was often visited by Frank Sinatra when he used to visit Barbados.

This area of Barbados is home to so many good hotels, restaurants and shops; in addition it has some of the best beaches with golden sand and calm waters that are ideal for swimming.

The strip starts just outside of Bridgetown with the first beach being Batts Rock, then as you head up the west coast you will come to Prospect, then Paynes Bay, then Sandy Lane Bay.

Once you reach Sandy Lane Bay you have also reached two of Barbados’ most prestigious golf courses, which are located at Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland hotels.

If you are interested in sport then you will also find a Polo field held at Holders House, which is also located in St. James. In addition Holders House hosts an annual event called the Holders Season, where they transform the grounds in to a wonderful stage for theater, music and the arts. Just north of Holetown you will find Folkestone Marine Park, which is excellent for snorkeling, diving or a trip in a glass bottom boat for a glimpse of some beautiful marine life.

So if you are looking for a good place to eat, shop, and some great places to stay or if you just want to enjoy some history and culture, then St. James is the parish to visit.
