The cast for Shrek, the St. Winifred’s production for 2016, has been in rehearsal for several weeks now. When we caught up with the show’s producer, Anne Marie McConney, she was beaming as she told us: “At this point in time we are right on target, and I feel confident that we have one of the best shows we have ever produced. An excellent summer’s work leading to an excellent final product!” She further noted that, “The fantastic five, Shrek, Fiona (in human and ogre form), Donkey and Puss are crushing it, and have a chemistry that can’t be taught.

Lord Farquaad is a tyrant with a personality bigger than his size, and Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother are delightful. Additionally, the choreographers have outdone themselves this year and have created outstanding dances that make me smile every time I see them.” Shows start November 19 and ticket sales start end of October. Remember to get tickets early this time…they do tend to sell out quickly!

History

The first pantomime at St Winifred’s was Mother Goose, produced in 1969 by Anna Adamira. It was hard work with a limited budget but it was a great success and led to four more pantomimes being produced in the seventies: Aladdin (1971), Puss in Boots (1973), Robin Hood (1975) and the Fire Princess (1977). There was a break in the eighties and then the pantomime returned in 1989 with Sleeping Beauty.

Anne-Marie McConney took over the producer role and many followed, such as: Robinson Crusoe, Aladdin (again), Treasure Island, Jack & the Beanstalk, Wizard of Oz, Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland, The Grinch and Peter Pan. This cherished tradition continues this Christmas with “Shrek” expected to delight audiences of all ages!

It may be summer holidays but St Winifred’s School is a hive of activity every day. Rehearsals are in full swing for the upcoming Christmas production of Shrek. The show is shaping up superbly.
