Caribbean Sea to be designated Special Area

The Caribbean Sea will from May 1 next year be designated a “Special Area” under provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), a senior Barbados government minister has said.

“This means from that date the disposal of garbage and other pollutants in the wider Caribbean Sea is strictly prohibited, except in cases where it is processed in accordance with Annex V,” International Transport Minister George Hutson said as the region gets ready to join the international community in observing World Maritime Day today.
