Apostle stakes Triple Crown claim at Garrison 2007

Apostle stakes Triple Crown claim at Garrison

It was a case of Apostle first and the rest nowhere as the Elias Haloute and Sir Charles Williams owned colt scored a decisive win in the day’s feature race at the Garrison on Saturday 24th March, 2007. Under an enterprising ride from Anderson Trotman, the 3 year old raced to glory in the Michael Parravicino Memorial Hopeful Breeders’ Trophy, leaving several well touted rivals toiling in his wake.

Apostle shared the lead with Shock And Awe during the early stages of the contest but was out on his own three furlongs from home. From that point onwards, Trotman never had a moment’s anxiety and the Andrew Nunes-trained horse ran on well to score a facile 3lengths victory in the 1570 metres event.

Hawayan Tropic emerged from the pack to finish an honourable second with Charlie Blue third and the promising Aquarius Star fourth. Miss Spitfire took a tumble on the far side, giving Martiniquan jockey Lorraine Lalung a nasty fall. Both horse and rider were quickly on their feet.

Apostle will now be trained with the Triple Crown very much in mind. At this stage, he still has to prove that he is in the same class as Zouk, the flying filly who won last year’s Triple Crown but Apostle has won two of his five races to date and is clearly going the right way.

The day’s principal supporting race, the Realtors Ltd Condition Trophy, proved to be another triumph for Trotman and Nunes, this time in the shape of the blindingly fast filly Hot Shot. The three-year-old won as she pleased and is now unbeaten in her three starts over 1100 metres.

Three jockeys, Trotman, Anderson Ward and Chris Husbands shared the riding honours, each booting home two winners. Nunes ended the day with three successes to his name while Liz Deane sent out a brace of winners.
