Alex Cummins – Rock, Blues, and a Touch of Country from Barbados
Born and raised in Barbados, Alex Cummins is a guitarist and vocalist whose sound blends Rock, Blues, and Classic Country into a distinctive style that’s soulful, gritty, and rooted in experience.
His musical journey began at age 12 after hearing classical flutist James Galway on TV. That moment sparked years of classical training on the flute, earning ABRSM certifications and performing with the National Youth Orchestra and his school’s ensemble. But even then, rock music was always close by – bands like Iron Maiden and Smashing Pumpkins lit a fire that would shape his next chapter.
In 1991, everything changed. Pearl Jam’s Ten introduced a baritone voice to mainstream rock, and suddenly, Alex found his place. Inspired by the likes of Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he picked up a guitar, started a band in school, and hit the stage.
By the mid-90s, he was performing covers of Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins across Barbados, especially at legendary venues like Sandy Bank and Harbour Lights. When that first band split, he turned to acoustic work – digging into the Blues, exploring its roots, and eventually falling for the raw honesty of Bluegrass and old-school Country.
Today, Alex splits his time between solo performances and fronting his band, Rock-It 27, playing at restaurants, bars, and private events across the island. Recent highlights include opening for Tusk, the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, at Harbour Lights and performing at the Barbados Fun Run.
Outside of music, Alex is a multi-talented educator, teaching Spanish, Math, and Guitar online – a role that keeps him grounded while still sharing his passion.
Whether performing stripped-down acoustic sets or full electric shows with Rock-It 27, Alex delivers honest, heartfelt music that speaks to generations of rock and roots fans alike.
