I was fortunate to be invited by Diamonds International partnered with Montblanc to a prize giving ceremony for the twenty (20) top achievers of the Barbados 11 plus common entrance exam in the Court Yard at Limegrove Lifestyle Centre.

I was very proud to witness all these young kids, who came from all different backgrounds, races and schools, sit expectantly for the ceremony to begin.

I was also extremely please how many family members came out to support their children, all armed with their cell phones taking proud pictures of their offspring. So often we have achievers in this island who do not appear to have family backing but this was not so at this event.

The girls were dressed in their Sunday best with matching shoes, pretty outfits and fancy hair styles. The boys in their polished shoes and their crisp shirts. All so expectant. All so proud of their achievements in the 2014 11 plus common entrance exam in Barbados.

The ceremony was officiated by Ms. Adeline Lister of Diamonds Intentional. Mr. Jacob Hassid and Mrs. Hassid were not present due to circumstances out of their control, however, Mr. Roger Holder delivered the address to the students on behalf of Mr. Hassid.

The keynote speaker was the Honorable Ronald Jones, Minister of Education and the presentation of the Montblanc Pens to the students was made by both Minister Jones and Minister Lashley.

Mr. Jones gave an amusing account of trying to achieve his driver’s license as a young man and it taking him three separate attempts to accomplish this goal.

In doing so he encouraged the children to go for their goals even if it takes a few tries to achieve them. He also cautioned them to stay focused on their studies as they go on to secondary school and continue to realize success.

Each participant was given a gift bag that held an impressive Montblanc writing instrument for their success by Minister Ronald Jones and Minister Steven Lashley.

The gathering was then treated to a celebratory cake, hors d’oeuvres and a drink.

I applaud Diamonds International and Montblanc luxury brand and creator of writing instruments, for taking the time to honour these young souls and in their effort to try and encourage them to be successful in the future.

It takes time and organizational skills to put this all together and Diamonds did a terrific job.
