Rum Punch Recipe
Punch comes from the Indian word "panch" which means five. The five refers to the fiver ingredients of sour, sweet, strong, weak and spice. The poem for rum punch goes: One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak, a dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice, serves well chilled with plenty of ice.
You will need the following ingredients:
1 measure of lime juice, freshly squeezed
2 measures of sugar syrup - see method
3 measures of dark Caribbean rum, the older, the better
4 measures of water
Dash of Angostura Bitters and freshly grated nutmeg
Place two measures of sugar in a saucepan with a little water and cook until the sugar has dissolved and add to the juice.
Add the rum and water. A good quality passion fruit juice can be used instead of water but reduce the syrup slightly.
Serve with plenty of ice, a dash of bitters and a grating of nutmeg.

The first time I had rum punch was in 2013, at Turtle Beach Resort as soon as we got there. It knocked my socks off!!! Rum punch has been my drink of choice when on holiday and I will attempt to make my own soon.

By far the best rum punch on the island is at Cutter's Deli (key is to use only Cockspur Old Gold Rum):
One part fresh lime juice
Two parts simple syrup
Three parts Cockspur rum
Dash of nutmeg and Angostura Bitters

John, this recipe is for Bajan (Barbadian) Rum Punch which has no Orange Juice. One can certainly make Jamaican Rum Punch with Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice, or whatever juice you like.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Orange Juice. My brother in law always uses Orange Juice but it looks like you can use water or Orange Juice.

We were there in 1970-1972 and a local couple made what they called Rum Punch with lots of fruit in it. Tasted like fruit cocktail with a kick. Anyone know how to make this?

We go to Barbados every year and next weekend we are having a Barbados reunion party at our house in Rhode Island. I cannot duplicate the rum punch that is served at Divi Southwinds and it is the best I've ever had. the owner of Hunte's garden also made a delicious and fresh-tasting rum punch which he makes with lime juice and water. I tried using lemon juice and guava juice and the drinks were good, but not as good as Divi Southwinds's recipe. This year we also had a bottled rum punch sold at the Gap convenience store and it was very close. I wish I could duplicate these......

A measure is whatever that you want to measure with. If it is a 1 oz jigger then you will finish with 10 oz.s If you use a 1 cup measure you will end up with 10 cups. If you use a bucket then you will end up with 10 buckets of punch and one shattered liver

My Bajan Rum Punch came from the original, however I have found that using four shots of water creates too much water as the ice melts and you also use water to create sugar syrup which makes the drink too weak.
2 Sugar Syrup
2.5 Mount Gay Rum
Ang Bitter 2-3 slashes per glass
It tastes exactly the same as any punch you get in Barbados

Angusturas bitters - from supermarkets eg Sainsbury. Look on mixer or gin/rum shelves. Ang bitters are traditional addition to gin to make 'pink gin'. Just a few drops is needed.

We are just back from a wonderful trip to Barbados. We brought back some local rum and needed an accurate recipe to make some Bajan Rum Punch at home. I'm not a cocktail guy I mostly drank Banks beer the #1 beer of Barbados. But the best rum punch I had was made by Ian, one of the guides on the safari tour. The great thing about Barbados, every tour provides free rum punch and makes you drink it.

I had 2 cups of that rum punch, this time last year on pebbles beach.. it was fantastic.. i came home from my trip and tried to make it.. It was not the same.. This rum punch smells like Thanksgiving but it feels like a cool summer day.. I absolutely love it..

The great mystery of "Rum Punch" is that a 'measure' can be any quantity you want. A bucket? Depends how thirsty you are. What's key are the proportions!

Anyone who asks what a "measure" is has had too many rum punches or should not have any. But to answer the question, it depends on how big a batch of punch you want to make. If you use "cup" in place of measure, total batch size is 10 cups.
